Road Test

by Lee Gibson, drivingforce.uk.net

WITH the two millionth car rolling off the production line in France a few weeks ago and already being Toyota’s biggest selling vehicle in Europe, the Yaris has clearly been doing something right since it first hit the road in 2001.

The small hatchback has been an enduring success story and with the recent unveiling of the third generation model, clearly has a lot of miles left in the tank yet.

As they bid to hold off the increasing number of small SUV and MPV-style crossovers that are encroaching into the supermini market place, the Japanese company have given their little stalwart a comprehensive makeover inside and out.

A sharper, younger look, more cabin room and some generous equipment levels should see the Yaris comfortably consolidate it’s position in this ultra-competitive segment – and this 1.33-litre five door version with TR spec is likely to prove the pick of the bunch.

It strikes just the right balance between performance and economy and practicality and comfort – something which is increasingly important when buying a car of any size, let alone a small one, in these tight economic times.

The lively engine kicks out 98bhp and proves both sprightly and refined in urban traffic, offering reasonable acceleration and a top speed of 109mph.

Wind and road noise does become a little more intrusive at motorway speeds but you won’t be left behind as the willing engine still proves more than game on the open road.

In fact, if you’re prepared to work the six-speed gearbox you will find that you have the pace and versatility to cope with most day to day driving eventualities.

The ride is largely untroubled thanks to a reworked suspension and handling is nimble and sharp via the light and responsive electric power steering.

And with an extra 100mm in length over the outgoing model the new Yaris offers more practical space too with better rear legroom now complementing the already spacious accommodation up front.

Although interior materials are not particularly plush and internal design touches are at a minimum to maximise the space, Toyota have still squeezed in some appealing new kit.

The headline item is the addition of the Toyota Touch entertainment system which is operated via a 6.1-inch touchscreen – thus cutting down the number of knobs and dials on the dash and giving it a clean, minimalist look.

The system includes Bluetooth and USB connectivity and the screen also relays the view from a rear-view camera to aid reversing and parking. For £500 extra this can be upgraded to a full touchscreen satnav system.

Other standard kit in TR trim includes 15-inch alloy wheels, aircon, see-me-home headlights, and a leather steering wheel and gear knob while seven airbags and stability and traction control systems take care of safety.

With competitive pricing for its class and average fuel economy of more than 50 miles per gallon coupled with low carbon emissions and a low insurance group, owning the Yaris shouldn’t put too much of a strain on the wallet either.

All of which, along with Toyota’s generous five-year/100,000 mile warranty and impressive reliability record, mean it will continue to have strong appeal to those looking for a small car which is capable of coping with basic family needs.
