First Drive - Vauxhall Zafira Tourer

by John Connor, drivingforce.uk.net

VAUXHALL'S new Zafira range is a little like that of a bespoke tailor's with differing models designed to suit all shapes and all sizes.

And therein lies a quandary, for the variations of this multiplex line-up are so extensive that choice becomes up close and personal.

The new Zafira Tourer is a step up from the versatile MPV Vauxhall has blazed a trail with for many a year.

I was initially impressed by the 1.4 Turbo SE. It redlines 126mph, has a combined fuel return of 44.8mpg, a CO2 rating of 148g/km, and a price tag of £24,005.

But Vauxhall's in-house experts say that the two-litre, 130ps Exclusiv, ecoFLEX, start/stop version, at £23,950 is expected to be the best selling model.

With a top speed of 120mph, a combined fuel return figure of  62.8mpg, and a CO2 rating of 119g/km, I can see where they are coming from.

In addition to ticking all those critical running cost boxes it is also exceptionally well appointed.

Amongst its standard fittings are climate control,  digital audio, cruise control, central deadlocking, ESP, six airbags  and like the rest of its stable-mates, it can swallow up to 1,860 litres of luggage.

Optional extras include, a seat comfort pack with tilt and lumber adjustment, a sat nav with street level mapping, parking sensors and a Bluetooth phone system.

Overall the 2012 enhanced Zafira Tourer is the epitome of the people carrier sector and whilst it is more compact than many of its peers, it nevertheless competes well.

It is also well built and the engineering is top notch delivering smooth and easy handling.

On the  motorway its has a touch of a long distance tourer about it while in town it is a delight.

It parks easily, aided and abetted by all round sensors, which are a 'must have' option, and accelerates on command.

Its stop/start function is a little spooky, however.

It extremely quiet in its operation, but it works and it saves fuel, and after I had got used to silence at the traffic lights I decided that I would add it to my list of 'must have' features.

In the countryside the latest Zafira handled twisting lanes well, helped by an excellent suspension system that appears to level out the growing number of pot holes.

A light but positive steering system and decent all round vision were further bonuses.

The only thing I would like to see changed are the door mirrors which were a little small for my liking. When fully loaded, family transporters of this ilk need as much rear view vision as possible.

Other than that, the new Zafira Tourer offers genuine value to motorists looking for a multi-role family car.

It comes with a superb specification and performance with reasonable running costs whilst carrying a price tag that will not break the bank.
