 This village lies one mile south east of Huddersfield Town Centre out towards Castle Hill. The origins of this ancient settlement are far older than those of nearby Huddersfield and once out did its now larger neighbour in trade and commerce. The town's oldest parish was an important centre for activity and commerce during medieval and Tudor times. A market was set up in the village in the thirteenth century and continued to be held on Mondays for 300 years. During the 1600s Huddersfield began to replace Almondbury as the main centre of commercial importance in the area. The village is also close to Castle Hill, Huddersfield's most prominent landmark. The hill has been the location for an Iron Age fort, a Norman castle and hunting lodge and is now topped by the Victoria Tower which was built to celebrate the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria's reign.
